(This is the 5th Part of the series)
In Part One, I discussed the ingredients that you might use, or look for, in a Toner for Normal skin.
In Part Two, I continued with the next skin type: Oily.
In Part Three, the post went on to discuss the skin type: Dry.
In Part Four, the next skin type was Combination Skin.
And now, on Part Five, we’ll be addressing Mature Skin.
Mature skin is manifested by increased wrinkling, loss of moisture, rougher texture, loss of firmness, and the appearance of areas of discoloration. While some aging is intrinsic (caused by internal and natural factors that we don’t have much control over), the other side of aging skin is extrinsic (caused by external factors that we DO have control over).
The Intrinsic Factors:
- Less Collagen is produced
- Decline of Natural Moisture
- Less Blood Flow and Cell Turn-Over
- Thinning of Skin
The Extrinsic Factors:
- Smoking
- Caffiene Intake
- Sun Damage including: Tanning on purpose
- Unhealthy Diet including: not enough fat intake, eating “fake” food without nutrients, minerals, and vitamins
- Not drinking enough Water
- Drinking too much alcohol
- Living in Polluted areas
- Stress
Although there are factors beyond our control, it’s obvious that there are also many factors that are completely in our hands. We just have to decide that we’re going to make a change for the better. And for many of us, our skin definately mirrors our health.
Instead of:
- trying to fake our “good” health through covering our skin in loads of makeup,
- going to tanning salons in order to be tan,
- living in a Doctor’s office getting things cut off, scraped away, sandblasted, injected with a deadly toxin.
Before I upset anyone, I’m not referring to most makeup, some tanning, and neccessary upkeep at the Doctor’s…I just find it frustrating to watch people cover the problems instead of taking care of them. And although we all “suffer” aging, we can improve our skin by improving our health.
When dealing with a specific skin type, each toner is created with the following ingredients in mind:
- A liquid (or liquids) that is the main ingredient
- One or more Essential Oils for specific needs
- Possible extra additives for other specific needs
The toner ingredients we look for to assist Mature Skin are:
- The liquid: You could choose Distilled Water, Hydrosol, Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, or Carrier Oil. Depending on what ingredients you choose, any of the above would work.

Jojoba Flower
- The Essential Oil: on Mature skin, I would use the following: Neroli, Rose, Lavender, Carrot Seed, Frankincense, Fennel, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Geranium, and Bergamot.
The Extras: The extras that would be helpful would be Vitamin C, Fruit Acids (AHAs), Vitamin A, Copper, and Vitamin E.
The basic thing to keep in mind when trying to make or find a skin care product for Mature Skin, is to look for ingredients that activate our own skin functions. We’re wanting to increase skin-cell turn-over like we had when we were 20, to help maintain moisture and elasticity, and to stimulate blood flow and oxygen. We want all of this, plus we want it to be fresh and without synthetic preservatives…

Frankincense
This is the end of Part 5, on “Mature Skin: Looking To Get Toned”. The next and last installment will post tomorrow.
